1 million extra Galaxy Z Fold 8s. Samsung is taking the display chips from its 2027 phones.

Korean reports say Samsung is redirecting display driver ICs booked for 2027 into Galaxy Z Fold 8 production. Some US delivery dates have slipped to October.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 outsold Samsung’s own forecast. According to ZDNet Korea, Samsung is now feeding display driver chips it had reserved for 2027 handsets into Fold 8 production, because the Taiwanese foundry that builds them has hit its capacity ceiling. Samsung hasn’t confirmed any of it.

The chip Samsung ran short of

The bottleneck is a DDI, the little controller that turns a phone’s graphics output into voltages an OLED panel can use. Samsung’s System LSI division designs the Fold 8’s version, and Taiwan’s UMC manufactures it on a 22nm process. That node is full. An industry source told ZDNet Korea that UMC’s 22nm capacity “has reached its limit,” in the outlet’s Korean-language report, and that Samsung’s request for an expedited run was turned down. A DDI run takes roughly four months from wafer start to finished chip, and the design is panel-specific, so Samsung can’t shuffle spare inventory over from the Flip 8.

So it borrowed from next year. A second source told the same outlet that driver-chip volume secured for 2027 development work is being pushed into Fold 8 mass production, a detail 9to5Google and Android Authority both picked up this week.

The volume pressure showed up earlier in August. ETNews reported that Samsung ordered components for 1 million extra Fold 8 units on top of an original 2.8 million-unit plan for the year, after the Galaxy Z8 series drew 1.44 million preorders between July 28 and August 4. That’s 38.5% above the Z7 series’ 1.08 million, and roughly 70% of those orders went to the Fold 8, the model whose shorter, wider shape Samsung teased in late June.

Buyers felt it. Delivery estimates on Samsung.com slid past the August 12 launch window into September, and a few configurations now show October. Samsung told affected customers, “Due to high demand, we are experiencing a delay in delivery on popular combinations,” in a notice Android Authority published on July 31. Hinge and ultra-thin-glass orders are up as well. The Galaxy Z Flip 8, by contrast, is tracking below plan.

Memory prices already had a grip

Foldable supply is landing on top of a memory market that has been repricing consumer hardware all year. TrendForce expects conventional DRAM contract prices to climb 13% to 18% quarter over quarter in the third quarter, with NAND flash up 10% to 15%, and says handset vendors “are expected to raise retail prices in the third quarter to offset persistently high LPDRAM costs”. Suppliers keep steering wafer capacity toward HBM for AI accelerators, the same squeeze that took a gigabyte of memory from $2.80 to $12 and added €200 to an Xbox Series X in Europe.

There’s a feedback loop hiding in the preorder number. An industry official quoted by ETNews suggested that high memory prices concentrated early demand into the preorder window, where Samsung’s double-storage promotion handed buyers the upgrade they’d otherwise be paying for. If that read holds, some of the shortage Samsung is scrambling to cover is demand its own promo pulled forward from later in the year.

What the reports don’t answer

Four gaps sit in the reporting, and they’re the ones that decide how much this costs Samsung. Neither the ZDNet Korea piece from August 28 nor the English pickups a few days later name the products handing over their allocation.

  • Which 2027 products lose the volume. ZDNet Korea’s source calls it chips secured for next year’s development, without naming a model.
  • Whether the Galaxy Z Fold 9 schedule moves. Android Authority notes the report doesn’t say whether those reserves were earmarked for the successor or for extended Fold 8 output.
  • Whether Samsung reprices the Fold 8 mid-cycle rather than eating the cost.
  • Whether UMC frees any 22nm capacity at all. It told Samsung it couldn’t go faster without disrupting other customers’ parts.

What this means for you

If your Fold 8 order keeps sliding, the constraint is one 22nm line in Taiwan plus a four-month cycle time, so it isn’t the kind of thing that clears in a week. Carrier and third-party retail stock has been moving faster than Samsung.com since early August, which is worth checking before you sit on a preorder into October. For the 2027 Galaxy lineup, development silicon spent this year has a way of reappearing later as a slipped date or a quietly trimmed spec, and Samsung is making that trade while Omdia projects foldable shipments doubling to around 36 million units by 2028. Watch Samsung’s third-quarter earnings call in late October. If it reports Fold 8 shipments north of 3 million and still won’t discuss driver-chip supply, the bill for this quarter is being charged to next year’s phones.
