Apple’s first 2nm chip went into its cheapest desktop. The M6 debuts in the $899 Mac mini, while the $5,499 Mac Studio ships M5 Max and a new quad-die M5 Ultra. Preorders opened Tuesday.
The split is the story. Apple refreshed both desktop Macs on the same day and put two different chip generations in them, and the cheaper one got the newer process node. M6 has the fastest single-core performance Apple has ever claimed, and it stops at 32GB of unified memory. M5 Ultra reaches 512GB and 80 GPU cores. One box is quicker at one thread. The other holds a model 16 times the size. Deciding between them has nothing to do with which chip is newer.
What Apple actually shipped
M6’s CPU has 12 cores: two super cores, four performance cores and six efficiency cores. Pair that with a 12-core GPU and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple rates the chip at 170GB/s of memory bandwidth, 10% over M5, and claims the world’s fastest single-threaded performance. Against the M1 still running in a lot of working Macs, that’s up to 2.4 times the CPU and eight times the GPU compute for AI.
M5 Ultra goes the other way. It’s the first quad-die M-series part, made by fusing two dual-die M5 Max chips over a next-generation UltraFusion link Apple rates at more than 4.4TB/s of inter-die bandwidth and six times the connection density of the previous version. Phoronix called it Apple’s most powerful silicon design yet, and noted the M6 is the company’s first part on TSMC’s 2nm line. The Ultra tops out at 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, a 32-core Neural Engine and 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth, half again what M3 Ultra managed.
“Today, we’re debuting the next giant leap in performance and AI compute for Apple silicon with the incredibly advanced M6 and the most powerful M-series chip yet, M5 Ultra,” said Sri Santhanam, Apple’s vice president of Silicon Engineering Group, in the chip announcement. Both machines went up for preorder on August 25 and ship September 22, with the 512GB Mac Studio configuration slipping to late October.
What Apple didn’t explain
No reason was given for the 32GB ceiling on M6. The M5 Pro option in the same Mac mini chassis reaches 64GB, so the limit belongs to the base chip rather than the enclosure, and Engadget clocked the M6 mini at 170GB/s against 307GB/s for the M5 Pro version. Whether the ceiling is an architectural decision or a supply one, Apple isn’t saying.
The timing makes the question fair. MacRumors documented the entry Mac mini jumping from $599 to $799 on May 2 when Apple retired the 256GB tier, and the M6 model now starts at $899. TechCrunch reported this month that Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman found even the MacBook Air short, with base units slipping into late August and some size, color and storage combinations into September, because DRAM makers have pointed capacity at AI data centers. The same squeeze has been pushing up consumer device prices all year and pushed Apple into qualifying Chinese memory to get out from under it. Microsoft raised Xbox prices for the same reason.
Nobody at Apple explained the generational split either. An Ultra part needs a Max die to fuse, and M5 Max only just shipped, so an M6 Ultra would need an M6 Max first. That’s the obvious reading, and Apple hasn’t confirmed it, hasn’t dated M6 Pro or M6 Max, and hasn’t said which Mac gets them. The company also skipped the usual fall event and put all three announcements out as press releases on a Tuesday in August.
What this means for you
For a general-purpose desktop, the M6 mini at $899 is the better chip, and the 32GB ceiling is the part to think about hard. Thirty-two gigabytes handles a browser, an IDE and a few containers fine. It gets tight if you want a 20-billion-parameter model resident while you work, and no Apple silicon Mac lets you add memory later. If local inference is the point, Mac Studio’s M5 Max at $2,499 buys 128GB and M5 Ultra at $5,499 buys 512GB, on the older node but with 40 and 80 GPU cores against the M6’s 12. Waiting for an M6 Pro or M6 Max in a MacBook Pro is a bet with no date attached. And if 32GB is already at the edge of your budget, order early: memory supply is what pushed MacBook Air ship dates into September.
